082: “Instagram’s New Algorithm: What Actually Works Now” (October 2025)
Peace and Light Fam,
This week we’re keeping it tight and tactical. Instagram algorithm changes are rolling out, and if you care about reach, revenue, and relevance, you need to move with them. Lets lock in real quick!
Big picture
Instagram crossed 3 billion monthly users. That scale matters because small signals now create big waves when you align with what the algorithm prioritizes. Messaging, Reels, and recommendations are driving the platform and Instagram is reworking the app and controls to reflect that.
What changed (and what to do)
1) “Tune your algorithm” controls
Instagram is testing a feature where users can add or remove interest topics that shape what they see across Feed, Reels, and Explore. Translation for you: niche consistency gets rewarded even more, because people can explicitly opt into topics you post about. Lock your lane and signal it in every asset: bio keywords, captions, hooks, and on-screen text.
Quick actions
Tighten your niche to a core category for the next 30 days. You don’t have to do just one thing. But everything will be in the orbit of the core.
Put the category in your bio handle or name field plus first 120 characters of your bio.
Start reels with an interest-tag style hook: “For touring rappers who handle their own merch…”
2) Stories “penalty” bug fix
For the last couple years, posting many Stories in one day could tank reach on that first Story. Instagram says the issue is fixed. You can post more without the first one getting clipped. That said, single, text-heavy Stories with a clean CTA still perform.
Quick actions
Keep your “single, text-heavy, reply-worthy” Story as your anchor.
Add a stack after the anchor: proof, product, and a DM prompt to trigger replies.
Use DM keywords to auto-reply with links or resources to compound engagement.
3) Trial Reels crackdown
Trial Reels are now capped per day for many accounts, and duplicate uploads are being suppressed. If you re-run a concept, the opening visuals must materially change. Think new hook shot, new edit, or re-film. Five thoughtful trials beat 25 clones.
Quick actions
Cap yourself at five Trial Reels daily.
Build three distinct first-5-seconds per idea: A/B/C hooks on camera framing, motion, and headline.
Track CTR to profile and follows per variant, not just views.
4) Meta Verified = search lift
Instagram is prioritizing verified profiles in in-app search results. It’s not a magic wand, but if search is part of your discovery (local services, artists, venues), the visibility bump can be worth it. Treat the badge as a trust and support tool, not a content strategy.
Quick actions
If you serve local markets, test Meta Verified for 60 days and monitor search impressions from Instagram’s account insights.
Standardize your handle + name field for search intent: “HotCornerCreative | Brand + Music Marketing Strategy”
Ship two evergreen Reels tied to your core keywords weekly.
Non-Negotiables for the next 14 days
Design for shares. Shares are still the strongest growth signal. Ask yourself before posting: would someone send this to a friend with one line of context? If not, refine it.
Lead with DMs. Incentivize replies in Stories and Reels captions; set up simple
DM automations for resources, opt-ins, or booking. Messaging is a core growth lever on Instagram.
Stay on one topic. Mixed posting confuses the system and your audience. One topic, multiple angles, repeat.
Your 7-post micro-plan (copy this)
Reel: Pain-point hook that matches your niche interest term. CTA: “Comment ‘guide’ for the checklist.”
Story (single text): One big lesson + “Reply ‘link’ for the resource.”
Reel trial A: Same idea, new opening shot and line.
Carousel: 5 steps, one screen each. Last slide asks a DM question.
Reel trial B: Same idea, different on-screen text and framing.
Story stack: proof, product, prompt.
Reel: Case study with a straight-line CTA to your offer.
Final Thoughts
Nothing here is cute. It’s practical. The Instagram algorithm is giving you levers: clearer interest targeting, less Story penalization, stricter trial rules, and a search bump for verified. Keep it niche if you can. Design for shares. Work the DMs. Then let the scale work for you.
